Dr Derk Pol completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Melbourne University followed by a Postgraduate medical degree at Monash University in Churchill. He then undertook Basic Physician Training at Monash Health and subsequently fulfilled his advanced training in Cardiology at both the Royal Melbourne Hospital, MonashHeart and Ballarat Base Hospital. Derk completed an additional two-year fellowship in interventional cardiology at MonashHeart. During his interventional fellowship he co-founded Gippsland Cardiology Service, which has grown to be the largest cardiology practice in Gippsland and has cared for over 4500 patients thus far.

Derk has an interest in general cardiology, acute coronary syndrome and hopes to one day provide an acute cardiac service for myocardial infarctions for Gippsland patients at Latrobe Regional Hospital, where he was recently appointed Director of Cardiology. Dr Pol has published peer reviewed research in both Australian and international journals, in addition to presenting his work at national cardiology conferences. Dr Pol has public appointments at Latrobe Regional Hospital, The Alfred and The Victorian Heart Hospital along with admitting rights to Maryvale Private Hospital.

In his spare time likes to stay fit and active and enjoys running and cycling. He currently plays for the Yallourn Yallourn North Jets, as an unexceptional ruckman. He also considers himself a bit of a “car”diologist and on the weekends can be found tinkering in the shed, on anything with a motor.
